The family of Thomas “Randy” Gatewood hadn’t seen him since 2007 and believed the worst. Gatewood, an Air Force Veteran, went missing from his Yuma, AZ home and was found in 2011 with another man who were both believed to be abandoned by the caregiver in a hotel. Thanks to the first-ever San Diego-area “Identify the Missing” event, Randy’s family were able to update their missing person report with DNA that lead to their miraculous reunion. About six in 10 people with dementia wander, often leaving their loved ones worried. As shown in this touching NBC video, detective work at the event uncovered Randy’s medical records and matched his family’s DNA. From there, investigators found out where he was receiving care and were able to reunite the Randy with his younger brother, Gene.
